Victorian Floral Transfer Print Tile

A nice Victorian floral design of daisies nicely complete within its aesthetic border. A warm brown body printed and then coloured perhaps just with one green, the border looks different but that could just be a thinner 'wash' of the same green as on the leaves where it is thicker and brighter. The petals are painted with a hard white enamel which is quite three dimensional, the enamel used because of the brown clay body. Rather naive even crude, has the appearance of being made by a small manufacturer of builders ceramics, roof tiles and drains etc, there's a history of companies moving from building ceramics to decorative tiles, Doulton and J C Edwards are two companies who did so. Very heavy strong clay body, rather thicker than usual.

The design is very typical of the 1880s as can be seen by comparing with the wares of the likes of Sherwin and Cotton and The Decorative Art Tile Co, who probably took their design cue from W B Simpson of London.

Verso has WW embossed, possibly for William Wood who were making tiles in the time frame.

Condition: Excellent

Price: £50 (approx $90)

Ref: 01387

There is a small glaze chip on the bottom edge (could be tinted to be even less distracting) and other tiny glaze chips. Minor factory faults add to the period feel of this tile, it seems the brown glaze around the edge may have suffered a little when the white enamel was fired.

The tile is a little thicker than normal and made from brown clay so this is a really strong tile.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
