Very small chip right edge, other tiny
chips/roughness to the rim, occassional touches of
rubbing to high points overall surface is
excellent. Style: Arts & crafts floral A very pleasing Arts & Crafts barbotine
design which fills the tile. Natural earth tones
and a colour textured background combine to
create a warm and friendly tile. The body is of buff clay plastic clay and a
little thicker than usual, verso has the Sherwin
& Cotton Staffordshire Knot mark with the
pattern number B107 incised. This clay appears
to be proper fireclay rather than the usual clay
used for early barbotine tiles, Sherwin &
Cotton certainly made tiles from fireclay
including tube line art nouveau. Barbotine means decorated with slips in this
case the slips quite thickly applied to create a
three dimensional 'inpasto' effect.
