This is an super example of patent impressed tiles. The design is simple yet effective, crisp, bright and airy, aesthetic design at its best. The design has real quality and may well be the work of Lewis F Day from whom Wedgwoods commissioned designs for their patent impressed tiles.

Patent Impressed tiles are the best known special process tiles made by Wedgwood. Stiff wet clay (slip) was applied to the tile through a stencil resulting in a sharp, distinct line to relief tile decoration (which was often blurred by glaze bleeding on moulded majolica tiles). George Marsden, the inventor of the process was a former employee of Wedgwoods who licensed the process from his company and the tiles were acclaimed for their sharpness of decoration.

Typical of Wedgwoods Patent Impressed tiles this tile is in greens, browns, yellows and creams and on an olive green clay body. This tile back is fully marked with the Wedgwood name and the phrase 'Patent Impressed'.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
