Two minute rim chips, few very light surface
marks. Style: Art nouveau An excellent and most stylish art nouveau
design that fills the tile, a repeating design
but the repeat is unobtrusive and it works
superbly well as a single tile. The uniquely
stylised central poppy type flower in almost
triangular form has a kind of Egyptian feel, the
side whiplash style leaves look like serpents
and the intertwining stems at the base are
reminiscent of celtic style. On top of all that
in the plainer areas of background there are
indented trefoil or clover type motifs, it is a
fascinating design. Undoubtably intended for
single colour glazing as the moulding is very
subtle without raised outline or channel around
the elements, in this single colour it has real
presence. I have seen some in multicolour but
the colours spread and looked quite messy,
especially the edges of the relief. Verso spotlessly clean, some embossed 'AM'
but they aren't the usually Meakin (or later
Johnson style), these are earlier, faint rubber
stamped design registration number.
