Very tiny chip right edge, a few minute rim
chips, very light surface marks mostly near the
rim. Style: Art Nouveau A very rare tile from Corn Brothers, I call
it 'Alien Landscape' you make your own judgment.
This one from a group I bought over 30 years ago
and from the collection of someone I shared a
market stall with, I recall seeing just one in
the meantime but in too poor condition to
contemplate buying. I think it is fabulous,
quirky, indicative of the freedom of artists to
experiment enabled by the extravagence of the
art nouveau period, the kind of design I'd more
expect from George Marsden. Love to see it in
Marsden-like glazes but I won't hold my
breath. Verso a bit grubby, embossed C in opposing
corners. Handwritten in pencil notes from the
original retailer/wholesaler, "3 yds in stock
6x6" and "seconds", the latter most surprising
for it is better manufacturing quality than the
majority of tiles of the period, maybe it was a
showroom display piece and the notes referred to
what was available for sale.
