Style: Arts & crafts figural A most interesting and rare pair of tubelined
tiles with green tubeline and painted in shades
of blue glaze. Featuring a dutch couple in
traditional clothing and most unusually a couple
of cats too. Barratts produced very few tubeline tiles
preferring the cuerda seca process and these
seem to be a blend of the two. Very slender and
low relief line, tubeline usually being higher
relief and slip trailed producing a broader line
so perhaps tubelined using a soft clay mixed
with oil. Versos unmarked apart from a numbered die in
the manner of Barratt, copious pencil notes
apparently by the original owner, they would
have been wall hung in open-backed frames. Both have slight chips to bottom corners as if
from knocking against the frame whilst being
removed from the wall and then rehung. Very minor
surface marks, slight rubbing and very slight
scratches, those marks visible in the images are
manufacturing flaws.
