Just one minute chip bottom edge, extremely
minor surface marks, no crazing. Amazing condition
for 165 years old. Style:
Rococo, Watteau A quite wonderful and early tile, from the
Watteau series in a super shade of blue on a
clear white body. The series so named being in
the rococo style of Jean-Antoine Watteau was
pattern number 12 for Minton & Co. Very rare
to find this series marked Minton Hollins, the
earlier Prosser's patent marked Minton & Co
(also made by Minton Hollins) are more often
found and most are Mintons Ltd copies from the
1870s and 80s. Lovely quality and lovely
condition too, this would almost pass for
new. Verso very clean, embossed Minton Hollins
& Co etc and with seven round and two
bead-shaped holes familiar from Prosser's patent
tiles. Made shortly after the patent expired in
1854 and before the holes were abandoned. When
this was made Minton Hollins & Co was the
tile making division of Minton & Co, see
The
Minton Tile Companies for an explanation of
the history of the tile companies.
