Chips bottom left corner, quite well lost in the
pattern and revealing that the colours are in the
clay not a print, other tiny rim chips, one light
scratch otherwise perfect surface and brilliantly
glazed. Style: Arts & crafts/aesthetic/Gothic An incredible tile from this most excellent
of tile makers, in my top five although the name
not well knwon outside of specialist tile
collectors, a lovely, lively design in the
aesthetic taste with gothic influences in bright
earth tones. At first glaze appears to be an
excellent block print but the pattern is made of
clays inlaid in to the base clay, a demanding
and expensive process, rarely found glazed.
Glazed tiles unsuitable for flooring these were
almost exclusively used for hearths the glazed
surface being easy to clean and the
semi-vitrified clay body almost impervious to
moisture, thicker than standard tiles and rather
heavy. Great for use as a paperweight, trivet or
mug stand, very toughm durable tiles. Versos very clean, impressed Craven Dunnill,
Jackfield Nr Ironbridge Salop and pattern
number.also impressed presumably the date of
manufacture. One very small and a couple of dozen or so tiny
rim chips, light rubbing and other minor surface
marks yet still brilliantly glazed.
