A rather rare embossed majolica tile
from Booth though they made few this is one of
the two most often seen. Well embossed with
mythical birds and mask in the renaissance style
finished in a warm brown glaze.
Booth was one of the finest makers of floral
majolica tiles in the late nineteenth century
with brilliant colurs and glazes their tiles
have many fans. Specialising in high quality
tiles for fireplaces they made tiles for the
prestitiguous Carron Company amongst others
however they failed to make the transition to
embossed tiles almost eschewing the art nouveau
style.
Verso clean but slightly grubby, unmarked but
typical grid pattern however often attributed to
Woolliscroft in great part due to misdirection
from prominent eBay sellers.
