A fabulous natural study design of an Apollo
butterfly and flowering branch block printed in
black and painted with colours. One of a set of
six butterflies, early tiles from the 1870s and
representing the state of the art in brightly
coloured wall tiles.
Verso very clean, usual embossed Minton
Hollins etc with printed registration mark
recorded in the National Archives as seen below,
the registration refers to the border pattern as
Very good condition, some tiny chips/flakes
to the rim and minor surface marks the black
block print a little smudged in manufacture.
This from my personal collection and the best
example seen in a couple of decades. The design
also and more frequently found in six inches
even so still a challenge to find one in good
condition or better.
