Couple of marks from the original fireplace
frame otherwise perfect. Style: Gothic A superb example of traditional majolica,
opaque glazes on a coloured clay body. Six
enamel colours is a good number, the black
enamel is rare. The design is more often found
in more typical colours. These are very durable tiles such that they
were quite frequently used in exterior walls,
they are some of the best quality tiles ever
made and cost a small fortune in their day. The pattern number 157 is from the first few
years of tile making by Herbert Minton, possibly
as early as 1835. Of course it would then have
been made as encaustic rather than majolica and
probably only in two or three colours. It is
taken that the 'M' suffix to the pattern number
refers to majolica. Versos very clean, some smoke stain, embossed
Minton & Co., Stoke on Trent. Chip bottom right corner is a glazed over
manufacturing flaw, a mark from the original
fireplace frame bottom left otherwise perfect. Couple minute chips, slight roughness to the
rim, slight marks from fireplace installation A mark from the original fireplace frame bottom
left, other very minor marks.
