Tiny chip and a glaze crack bottom right corner,
a little roughness to the tip of the rim, very
minor surface marks. Style: Pastoral dutch A very rare tile with a quite charming scene
of a dutch boy feeding geese with the farmhouse
in the background the style reminiscent of the E
E Strickland designs for Carter however this
predates them by a couple of decades. Richards
the only company to use this technique of
printed outline with painted with brilliant
'majolica' lead-glaze colours in the 20th
century, Marsden did a few in the 19th century
and there are some by Wedgwood too which were
likely made for them by Marsden. Richards made
some rather more twee pictures of dutch children
in the same technique which were rather popular
originating in edwardian times and still made at
least as late as the 1940s latterly often in tea
trays. There are also some art nouveau tiles
made with the same technique which are
wonderful, I've seen maybe half a dozen, I
suspect there are at least a couple of dozen in
the range. Verso a very clean, embossed England.
