A pretty arrangement of arum lilies and fronds set
against a lace background and within a key pattern
border.
This is tile is both common and uncommon, a quirk of
victorian tile design. In its usual itteration, without
the lace backdrop, in my experience it is the commonest
of all the victorian floral patterns, certainly in the
top three or four. And it is a charming tile, the
balanced layout and natural colours having a homely feel,
many collectors will have one in their collection and
many are reused for tiling. The lace background gives
this version of the design an aesthetic feel, perhaps an
updating of the design to account for modern fashion. It
was probably made a few years after the original, in the
1890s. The pattern was also made in a majolica
version.
Great manufacturing quality, the glaze has very high
brilliance and shows the colours off to their best.
