Pictorial Printed & Coloured Children Tile
  • Style/technique: Pictorial Print
  • Manufacturer: Unattributed*
  • Pattern number: 33
  • Dimensions: 6" x 6"
  • Date: Circa 1890

A pleasing scene of children playing in the countryside, with an older boy sitting on a stile and younger children picking flowers. A good print decorated in excellent underglaze colours including pink and purple. I find the bird chasing the dragonfly quite an amusing little touch, not seen on the other version of this design.

This design without the corners and hence filling the tile but with considerably less detail is also noted with the script 'Rosebud Series' towards the bottom right and is based on illustrations in the children's magazine The Rosebud as noted in Tiled Earth, 1000 Years of Tiles In Europe where this tile is illustrated borderless and in monochrome, number 408.

The tile is about one quarter of an inch oversize.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format and on screen is about the size as it would be in real life at the same distance. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
