A few minute rim chips, some marks to the rim
are manufacturing flaws, a few very tiny touches of
wear to the glaze on the outlines and other very
minor surface marks. Style/technique: Art nouveau majolica One of this unusual genre a four corner
repeat symmetrical pattern which tend to lose
the expression of style and fall back to the
quatrefoil form so associated with gothic but
this keeps its art nouveau credentials intact.
The single pattern element could easily be put
on a 3 x 6 tile with a longer stem and small
base and look great. Just three colours which
vary in intensity and with the indented moulding
give the impression of a greater colour range.
The design introduction will date from around
1903 by virtue of the pattern number so
relatively early. Verso embossed C.O.V. and England and pattern
number written in glaze.
