Tiny chips left corners, edges slightly uneven
in manufacture. Perfectly clean and brilliantly
glazed. Style: Aesthetic japanesque A highly stylised transfer printed tile from
Wedgwood, a rarely found design in the
japanesque taste lotus flowers, conventionalised
floweread roundels and a variety of hatched
patterns. The design sits extremely well on a
tile framed within the plain surround and simple
border emphasising the design. Printed in deep
'indigo' blue and on a brilliant white clay
body. Possibly a Christopher Dresser design, the
National Archives have examples of designs by
Dresser for Wedgwood in similar vein. There is
no record of Dresser designing any tiles
although some of his designs for other materials
were adapted and used on tiles. He did design
other ceramics and this design was likely
originally intended for a plate, plate designs
were often used on tiles especially by Wedgwood
and in general by pottery companies that
branched out in to tile decorating or
manufacture. Verso perfectly clean, grid grip pattern
embossed Josiah Wedgwood etc. Only the very slightest of marks, edges slightly
uneven in manufacture. Perfectly clean and
brilliantly glazed. Only the very slightest of marks, edges slightly
