Half a dozen very tiny rim chips, surface almost perfect, perfectly clean and brilliantly glazed.

Style/technique: Aesthetic print & tint
Manufacturer: Sherwin & Cotton
Dimensions: 6" x 6"
Date: circa 1890

An aesthetic movement one may say arts & crafts style floral print symmetrical with flowers and buds filling the tile. A repeating design or perhaps part of a panel which stands well on its own. On a celadon clay body, semi-vitrified and so no glaze crazing, brilliant white highlights contrast against the clay colour. Four other painted colours so a seven colour tile with the clay and print, great quality throughout.

This tile made for Pickersgill & Frost ironfounders from Derby and designed for or by them, tiles for them are found very infrequently, always super quality.

Celadon tiles were nearly double the price of white tiles, a 1905 price list shows plain celadon tiles at 6/- per dozen where white are 3/6 per dozen.

Verso a little smoke stain, printed ironfounders initials and pattern number.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format, a larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
