This is a rare tile, the last I saw were over ten years ago. A persian style tile entirely hand made and hand decorated in the arts & crafts manner made in Holland for the british arts & crafts market.

The tile appears in Austwick (click for picture) and they attribute to Morris & Co possibly designed by Burne-Jones, but Austwicks' accuracy score is not so great. Richard and Hilary Myers in their excellent book 'William Morris Tiles' also illustrate the design and state that it is found in a fireplace at Kelmscott Manor the summer home of William Morris. The design appears on Thomas Elsley's catalogue cards as pattern number 77, "Persian Flower, red with blue", it seems likely that both Elsley and Morris & Co imported the tile.

Versos very clean, very slight remains of mortar, plain dutch blanks
