Two very tiny chips left edge, bottom right corner trimmed for original installation in a washstand, surface near perfect and brilliantly glazed.

• Style/technique: Art nouveau majolica
• Manufacturer: Corn Bros
• Dimensions: 6" x 6"
• Date: circa 1905

A good art nouveau 'twin flower' design with rather unusual treatment of the flowerheads suggesting rococo. Very curvaceous foliage with a suggestion of celtic design but overall a true examples of art nouveau. Thickly glazed with brilliant shiny glazes a warm and attractive tile.

This design was copied, or presumed copied, by Ceramique Faienceries de Gien of France although the company was started by an Englishman about eighty years earlier, an example can be seen here.

Verso a little grubby, embossed C's, painted pattern number.

* There were at least three companies with Corn in the name and two Corn Bros. E. R. Corn who started the tile business in 1891 said of the transfer of the busness to the new Pinnox Works in 1903, "at the same time, the existence of two other concerns bearing the family name -"Corn Bros." and "Corn Bros. & Co." - having led to confusion, the name of W. & E. Corn was allowed to lapse and the firm became "The Henry Richards Tile Company Limited".
