Two very tiny rim chips.
Style/technique: Floral print &
tint What an excellent floral design, quite rarely
seen, and of unusual style. The complex
aesthetic motifs in the corners leave a cross
shaped cartouche which is near filled by the
flower which has a most unusual style. Leaves, stems and flower have a very slim
plain border to them, leaves have several
different bold patterns, and the seed pods are
also very highly stylised. This style of artwork
bears similarities to some noted on some french
tiles and some by Brown, Westhead Moore who
presumably sold in to the french marketplace as
their tiles have been noted with the french
equivalent of copyright printed verso. This may
be possibly be by Brown, Westhead Moore but
there are many other possible candidates
too. An incredibly difficult tile to manufacture,
most noticable the skill required of the painter
to paint the outline around the flower and it is
very finely done. Also with the print going
right up to the edge of the tile and a regular
border of dots and square corner motifs the size
of the tile blank needed to be almost a perfect
match for the size of the print which had to be
applied precisely square. Verso some staining from original
installation in a fireplace, generic grid,
unmarked.
