A little flaking left edge other extremely minor
marks. Style: Floral * Widely but incorrectly called Marsden's
Patent or Patent Impressed. An absolutely fascinating group of tiles and,
as often is not the case, also very bright and
charming tiles. Made by the barbotine stencil process (which
has become confused with patent impressed) which
Wedgwood used for thousands of tile designs this
the first I know of where the stencilled slip is
in white clay and the colours are painted
majolica glaze colours. There appears to have
been some discussion about the design itself for
we have three slight variations, in the bottom
right corner there is a tiny leaf which differs
on each tile. We have one stencilled and
painted, another stencilled and not painted and
a third not there at all. Quite possibly experimental tiles the pattern
number has the usual R prefix for barbotine
stencils and a further V prefix that used for
majolica painted tiles. The advantage would be
incredible had the experiment been successful
and carried forward indeed could have altered
the direction of the tile industry for it would
have enabled majolica tiles to be made as short
production runs using plain blanks rather than
having to go through the.time and expense of
modelling tools to press moulded tiles. If
successful it may well have replace tubeline as
the majolica glaze technique cost effective for
limited editions, special designs and the
like. Versos very clean, painted pattern number
which suggests around 1883-4. Tiny chip upper left, touch of roughness and
very tiny chip nearby, other extremely minor
marks.
