Very small shallow chip top edge otherwise
perfect. Style: Aesthetic Gothic A pleasing gothic influenced aesthetic design
nicely printed in chocolate brown on turquoise
clay. A great colourway in my opinion, I really
like the turquoise although it does rather limit
some other colours. By Jackson Brothers not much
about whom is know, it appears that they made
tiles for most of the 1880s. This is unusual for
them being turquoise clay, it is also the
thicker hearth quality body, half an inch
thick. Turquoise clay tiles are uncommon but are
mostly superb, most we see from Booth's, they
may have made this biscuit for Jackson Bros,
often with white enamel decoration lifting
flowerheads and the like from the
background. Joan Jones, former curator of the Minton
Museum, reports that in an 1891 pricelist one
colour prints on ordinary clay bodies were 3/6
per dozen, on tiurquoise clay 4/6 per dozen, the
extra cost of thicker biscuit is not known but
likely around 25%. Of course those are Mintons'
price not Jackson Brothers but similar applies
to other manufacturers of the time. Versos very clean printed registration number
(faint). Very small shallow chip bottom left corner ,
minute chip bottom right corner. Three minute rim chips.
