Condition: Good Flakes to the tip of the rim left edge, other
very tiny > minute rim chips, half a dozen tiny
surface flakes. Style: Nature study A rare William Wise tile and picture tile of
a standing bull, printed in dark brown with grey
shading and surrounded by a chocolate brown
border. Probably because the series was
introduced when the fashion for picture tiles
was declining and being a multicolour print
these were more expensive than his other
series. Undoubtably the better tiles because they are
multicolour and purpose designed for the process
for which they were made. Wise's first and most
popular animal series, 'Animals of the Farm',
introduced in 1879/1880 were designed to be hand
coloured but rarely are. Taking this in to
account Wise gave much weight to the fine
background details especially leaves on trees as
they would need to show through the colour, when
the tiles are found coloured (which is rare) it
is clear what the intended effect was. Here with
the old brown print and grey shading we see so
much more, just as the artist intended. Verso very clean with Mintons name and
badge.
