Few very slight losses to the rim and very minor
surface marks. Style: Gothic chequer A good early gothic chequer design from
Steele & Wood who were a major tile maker of
the 1880s producing mostly tiles in the manner
of the times, aesthetic, floral and picture
series, most all as transfer prints. This rather
unusual for them, their embossed tiles few and
often not so well made, this is nice quality
manufacture on a buff clay body. Interestingly this design is also seen by
Carter of Poole. The Carter version is of later
date and likely made for them by another
company, there are many misunderstandings in the
written tile making history of Carter. Verso very clean, embossed No.2, grid grip
pattern.
