One tiny chip lower left, slight roughness to
the rim in places, minor surface marks. Style: Aesthetic Movement nature
study An excellent example of the styles of the
times an aesthetic movement interpretation of
nature in circular vignettes with sun motifs and
floral borders in a super shade of blue on a
good white body, this the half an inch thick
'hearth quality' body. John Bradburn was a prolific and respected
designer producing many of Minton Hollins most
popular designs of this period and then many
more for Maw & Co for another twenty years
or so. His name not so well recognised because
whilst being freelance in his early years the
bulk of his career was spent with Maw & Co,
and he concentrated on his design work rather
than writing books about it and seeking media
attention. Around the same time E. W. Godwin and R. Edis
produced designs for Minton, Hollins & Co.,
both better known than Bradburn their designs
were considerably less popular. It seems
counter-intuitive but the story is repeated so
often, the lionised designers' works were far
less well received than the designs of
(relatively) unknown artists. It is best to
simply appreciate art for what it is rather than
because other people, media people, say that it
is more worthy because it is attributed to a
particular known self-marketeer. Verso very clean, embossed Minton, Hollins
etc, indistinct registration lozenge.
