An excellent design by John Chambers rarely found it being used mostly on walls and rarely in fireplaces and furniture. A good bold design with a touch of islamic or Alhambra style about it indeed it was likely not considered art nouveau at the time however in retrospect it could be said to be in the new art style of the times. Interesting moulding the outline having a flat top and deliberately broad to make a statement as part of the design rather than merely an outline to separate the glazes.

Pilkington's style was guided by Lewis Day who had a vehement dislike of art nouveau preferring more natural forms, this seems to have held back Pilkington's for it is not until late September of 1902 that the first true art nouveau design from the company was registered. Perhaps the influence of Voysey overcame that of Day.

Overall an excellent piece of design which is effective as an individual tile as much as it would be in a lagre area. The centre section with the peacock feather style device is found as a 3" x 6" tile.

Verso clean but some smoke stain, embossed P in opposing corners.
