An excellent and rare sunflower tile, found on sheet 27 in the Mintons catalogue the first full sheet of embossed patterns and dating from 1891. Embossed and indented making quite high relief, finished in earth tones and wonderfully brilliant glazes, especially rare for this and other Mintons' patterns from the period are almost invariably found monochrome. Polychrome majolica tiles from Mintons almost always are low relief with a raised outline to contain the glazes, decorating embossed tiles in polychrome glazes was very difficult requiring both great skill of the painter and techincal expertise in glaze manufacture.

The reproduced 'circa 1885' Mintons catalogue (actually dating from 1883) incudes two sheets of embossed tiles of later date, 1891/92, which were additional sheets with the catalogue. This can readily be verified by looking at the pattern numbers. The introduction to the catalgue is therefore in error for Mintons far from leading the way were almost a decade behind Maw & Co. whose photographic catalogue sheet of embossed tiles dating from 1883 is reproduced in Barnard. Versos clean, some clay loss from original adhesive and remnants of later adhesive, embossed Mintons etc, painted pattern number.

Verso very clean, embossed Mintons etc.
