the four elements, earth, air, fire and water
described in the chinoiserie style printed in
dark brown on a strong and substantial buff clay
body. Phenomenal quality of design and
engraving, in Owen Gibbons distinctive style,
made at the Jackfield works. Owen Gibbons trained at the South Kensington
School of Art and was for a time, curator of the
Royal Architectural Museum, Westminter, London
before becoming head of the Coalbrookdale School
of Art in Shropshire. Whilst there he designed a
number of tiles for Maw & Co. He was also a
principle in the company of Gibbons Hinton &
Co. established by his brother Francis Gibbons
in the mid-1880s. Verso very clean, embossed Maw, Benthall
Works etc.
