Tiny chip top left corner the majority of the
mark there is a glaze miss, a dozen very
tiny/minute rim chips/losses, surface is lightly
rubbed to high points and near the rim especially
bottom where the glaze has pooled slightly. Style:
Art deco An interesting and very rare tile, I can't
recall seeing the design previously. One of
those 'is it art nouveau or deco' designs, art
deco is not 1920s onwards it is present in the
art nouveau period too for example their are art
deco designs by Corn Brothers who went out of
business in 1915. The grip pattern was in use
from around 1907 to the late 1920s so I've put
the date half way between but I suspect it may
be around 1910. A simple design but there is quite a lot in
it, there's perhaps an almost subliminal Calvary
there. It's interesting upside-down, assuming I
have it the right way up! The modelling and
moulding are superb and it's a good translucent
glaze, a fascinating tile. Verso very clean, embossed copyright and
England.
