Pilkington most always had a problem with glazes
conforming to the lines this somewhat more erratic
than typical perhaps one could say in accordance
with art pottery principles. Style: Floral, art nouveau A popular design, so popular that it was
copied by at least two manufacturers. The only
recorded design that Pilkingtons bought from
Rudd who is recorded as producing several for
Godwin & Hewitt. One of Pilkington's most
popular designs indeed I believe more so than
any by the famous names, Day, Voysey, Crane etc
indeed one wonders why comapnies used the design
services of the famous names if not for any
other reason that they were famous. A good if not great design of the swirling
nature with a major flowerhead at the centre and
minor flowerheads at the corners. From a pure
design point of view an obvious format and a few
examples are know in majolica tiles but this
stands above the others for simplicity of
execution, flow of the line and accordance with
modern taste. From the collection of A J Cross author of
the definitive work on Pilkington's Lancastrian
Pottery. Verso near perfectly clean, embossed P in
opposing corners.
