Bottom corners trimmed for the original
installation, one very light scratch otherwise
perfect surface. Style: Sea
Life? Of all the printed tiles that I collect it is
those of George Marsden that I seek and enjoy
the most for Marsden had an impressible ability
to combine art and technology in to the most
amazing tiles. I suspect the subject here is sea
creatures with shells and seaweed forming a
border for perhaps an anemone but I don't know
what the 'crowns' may represent. The technology is a patented printing
process, I haven't seen the patent so I don't
know what the process it but for sure it is more
than replacing painted colours with print to
save cost. The effect is etheral yet in brighter
colours then those most often found printed at
the time, the colours have texture rather than
the flatness of block printing and subsequent
process and the effect is achieved with
remarkable precision. I assume the colours are laid with a single
pass for there is no sign of registration errors
in those I have seen albeit few and just two of
this most compelling design. A more oft seen
design is also found in outline print, I should
find the time to study them further. Verso near clean, a little stain, unmarked
save for printed 'Patent. A10'.
