One very timy, a few minute rim chips/losses,
perfect surface. Style:
Aesthetic movement The design I have seen before but this colour
and treatmentis superb, rare and exceptional.
And this tile has a journey. The journey commences with George Marsden and
his patent for impressing patterns, shapes and
materials in to the clay body, this time it is
lace. Then the coloured slip clays are applied
through stencills to create the embossed design.
It is then fired. Then it is glazed, and this is a notable
glaze for it is grey. As tan is pale brown and
pink is pale red, celadon pale green etc, grey
is pale black. Conjour that concept for a
moment, how can this be? With great difficulty
is the only answer I can give. Soft grey is the perfect foil for brighter
colours (especially for the British) for it is
the colour of the sky that is the backdrop for
many objects and vistas. Every artist knows this
yet in glazes it is technically very difficult
to achieve given not only the formulation of
materials but the variabilites in firing
conditions that affected colour. After being successfully made by Marsden it
proceeded to Doulton's Lambeth studio there the
enamel painted red flowerhead motifs were added
and the gilding requiring at least one, perhaps
two, kiln firings. Since then, some 130 years ago, it was fitted
in to furniture or jardiniere etc where it was
lovingly cared for until somehow in the last few
decades it became detached and was appreciated
for itself by a collector. Verso perfectly clean, embossed Doulton,
incised numbers from Marsden, painted numbers
from Doulton, painter's and gilder's
identification, other marks/script.
