Fabulous arts & crafts panel with a
stylised arrangement of irises. Lovely flowing
style suggestive of the years immediately
preceding the popularity of art nouveau. Painted
outline in mid brown overpainted with brilliant
translucent coloured majolica glazes in lively
earth tones.
On unmarked Marsden blanks, almost certainly
decorated by Marsden but there is some slight
room for doubt for this was style of grip
pattern blank he also sold to other companies
including The Decorative Art Tile Co. The
technique however is more Marsden, one of if not
the earliest user of the technique of painting
with majolica glazes usually to a printed
outline, examples are most often seen on
Wedgwood prints. Marsden was associated with
Wedgwood, Wedgwood licensed Marsden patent for
impressing decoration of various forms in to
tile blanks and reports indicate that he managed
Wedgwood's tile making department from its
inception in 1881 until its closure in 1888.
Versos near perfectly clean, minor clay loss
from water based adhesive, unmarked but well
known Marsden biscuit.
Wonderful condition for a panel, one tile
broken and repaired, bottom row next to right,
very clean break and well repaired with just
three glaze chips on the line could easily be
filled but barely seen anyway. See the
individual tile pictures below. Otherwise a
couple of tiny bruises, slight glazes losses to
the tip of the rim, minute manufacturing flaw
inclusions in the glaze. Overwhelmingly clean,
bright and brilliant.
