An unusual series from a company in existence
for many years whose wares are infrequently
found. A series of ten pictorial subjects and a
registered design (although one must take it
that it was the border pattern that was
registered) block, printed in sepia and
grey.
One of the most amongst many curious and
humorous series for they are gastronomic
subjects most of which concerned with hunting
and gathering of foods including pineapple and
turtle. The pictures are also found on 4" x 6"
tiles with just slender borders and also upper
body pictures with borders top and bottom. The
designs registered in 1884 predate the more
famous and also rather curious gastronomic
series designed by Louis Solon and made by
Mintons Ltd, another case of the most famous
name in tiles copying rather than
originating.
With a plain rail verso embossed Webbs
Tileries Worcester the style almost identical
with the common Wedgwood rail verso. It is
considered highly probable that Webbs made tiles
for Wedgwood and most especially (some of) their
block printed patterns.
