London Tiles
London was the centre of the world in the late 19th century, the place that set the style. There were several tile designers and decorating companies in London and of course the manufacturer William de Morgan & Co was there too. Most produced hand decorated tiles of pictorial, aesthetic and arts & crafts style designs in smaller quantities in the late 19thC. Some achieved brighter underglaze colours than were generally available at the time, especially W B Simpson. Many of them sold exclusive designs made for them by the provincial tile companies as did other London companies such as bespoke decorators mechants, furniture retailers, architects and designers. Standard tile patterns were also purchased from provincial companies and often marked with the London suppliers branding, usually stencilled or stamped on the back of the tile.
